Teaching the new computing curriculum isn’t easy. If you want to get to grips with how to develop an innovative SOW that meets your individual school’s needs and includes exciting Computer Science activities and resources, then this is the course for you.

This practical workshop for senior and middle leaders and ICT staff in Primary schools, responsible for Computing in KS1 and KS2, will give you the confidence and tools to address the new requirements and build a quality SOW.  It will provide a practical hands on approach to developing your scheme of work and make sure you are aware of the key decisions to make. This course draws on best practice from around the country and is an opportunity to discuss your individual needs. Most important of all you will have at the end of the day a workable SOW. All attendees are encouraged to bring along their current SOW, but if you want to start from scratch that is ok too.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to: 

  • Develop long term and medium plans.
  • Review a SOW (Commercial / Free) with regard to the new requirements.
  • Develop activity ideas for an innovative SOW based on POS, Themes or Projects.
  • Develop the activities with appropriate resources.
  • Access the appropriate resources.
  • Review and discuss an appropriate assessment without levels approach to illustrate progression.
  • Identify what outstanding computing looks like.
  • Get started with a programming language.

Full Course Content

Participants will have the opportunity to learn something new, discuss ideas, provide feedback, investigate ideas, activities and resources. Participants will:

  • Discuss and share features of a good SOW.
  • Develop long term and medium plans.
  • Identify what to include in the SOW.
  • Review some example SOW.
  • Plan some key activities for the computing element of the SOW.
  • Identify some appropriate resources.
  • Try a Scratch activity.
  • Discuss assessment without levels to illustrate progression.
  • Determine next steps.
